The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) created the Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP) projects to reduce congestion and improve mobility along the State’s most heavily traveled corridors through innovative design solutions. These monumental projects include three interchange projects, four express lanes projects, three highway widening projects, and one commercial vehicle lanes project, with a total cost of $11 billion. The I-285 Top End Express Lanes project will improve mobility by adding two elevated, barrier-separated express lanes in both directions between I-75 and I-85, a stretch of interstate that carries more than 240,000 vehicles every weekday.
As part of this design-build project, VHB is developing the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on an accelerated project timetable with a Record of Decision (ROD) expected by 2021. The EIS is being prepared following Executive Order 13807, also known as One Federal Decision, which requires that the ROD be issued within two years of the Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS. Our team is leading efforts to identify ecological and historic resources, evaluate noise impacts, identify minority and/or low-income communities, evaluate impacts to communities and their resources, and assess indirect and cumulative impacts. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2023.
